The third video is here, showing you one of my favorite parts of the process: inking. As with the penciling, I’m using SAI for this purpose.

As I said already somewhere, using SAI is the closest I’ve found to working on paper. For inking, it has a very neat feature that allows you to smooth your traces, which allows me to emulate the same result I’d obtain using a real brush. Without it the inking would be far more shaky and ugly overall, which is why I prefer SAI over, say, Photoshop. The tact of the pen on the tablet will never compare to using a real brush on a paper, even with tricks like placing a paper over the graphic tablet to enhance the friction. It’s just not the same. It slides too much and drawing long lines is just a pain.

Como ya he comentado en algún otro sitio, usar SAI es lo más parecido que he encontrado a trabajar sobre papel. Para entintar, tiene una característica muy interesante que te permite suavizar tus trazos, lo que me permite emular el mismo resultado que obendría usando un pincel real. Sin él, el entintado sería mucho más trémulo y feo en general, y es por lo que prefiero SAI por encima de, digamos, Photoshop. El tacto del lápiz en la tableta nunca se podrá comparar con usar un pincel real sobre papel, incluso con trucos como colora un papel sobre la tableta gráfica para aumentar la fricción. Simplemente no es lo mismo. Resbala demasiado y dibujar líneas largas es realmente molesto.

But Robomeks hasn’t always been inked with SAI. For the first whole volume (those 75 pages) I exclusively used Adobe Illustrator. And, while it’s a nice tool that has its merits, its tendency to go wacky with lines when you tried to erase some, and the overall slowness of the tool made me look for alternatives. If you ever compare an old page with a new one you’ll see the diference in the results also. SAI gives a way more fluid and natural result on inking.

Pero Robomeks no ha sido siempre entintado con SAI. Para todo el primer volúmen (esas 75 páginas) usé exclusivamente Adobe Illustrator. Y, aunque es una buena herramienta que tiene sus méritos, tiene tendencia a volvrese loco con las líneas cuando intentas borrar algunas, y la lentitud en general de la herramienta me hizo buscar alternativas. Si alguna vez comparas una página antigua con una nueva también podrás ver las diferencias en el resultado. SAI ofrece un entintado muchísimo más fluido y natural.

In the next installment I’ll show you how do I approach coloring for Robomeks. Because of the length of that part of the process (and the 10 minute limit for videos in You Tube) it’ll be divided in two parts.
