There it is. The nanite menace. The gray blob. And, you know what they say. The easiest way to stop the fight between two enemies is… finding a third one!

Let’s hope the contingency is hunter-killer nanotech, a fat mass of EMP charges, or bots with plascannons (since blast furnaces seem to fuse the stuff just fine). You know, as opposed to glassing the site.
I’m actually hoping that whatever’s coming is effective. Yeah, it’s fun to see our heroes win. But it’s also nice to see that they’re not the only ones on their game; I got tired of games where nobody but me had any hope of stopping something, I guess. From what we’ve seen during the robot attack at the gladiatorial event, I’d say this’s a no-brainer on good help being on the way, but I like stating it anyway.
Robomeks aren’t definitely that kind of heroes. Even if they manage to pull some nice tricks now and then they can only deal with contingencies up to a point (and that’s mostly determined by their equipment). And, let me tell you, this isn’t one of those. The bad guy can’t stop that either. So, there you have it. As you said, no-brainer
And, about games, I think that’s a given as long as you want the player be part of all the action. If NPCs are given the “cool” tasks then, what’s left to do for you? Also, games usually equip the hero with so much stuff that he/she can deal with almost anything at mid-end game. Gordon Freeman can annihilate a whole alien race with just a crowbar, though.
BTW, expect some nice surprises next week. There’ll be updates every single day. Not necessarily pages.
Lucasarts, Star Wars X-Wing. You in a fighter versus an entire star destroyer and at least 24 TIE fighters. Wingmen are good for diddly squat. Most of the time it came down to having to make pass after pass after pass after pass with lasers, because the proton torpedoes really didn’t do that much. So yeah, balanced odds and competent help are things that I appreciate.
Oh, think the dialog from Ace is a little off during the third frame. “We should leave him here” would be more normal I think, but might not fit in the space. How does “He tried to kill me. Let’s leave him here and run!” strike you?
I think if it was me, I’d be mounting up on the the bot again and revisiting special tactic RLC (Run Like Cowards, wasn’t it?).
Thanks again for the heads up. It fits, no problem. Update should be up now.
That let/leave left me an unease feeling after publishing the page, too. But, as I thought it was essentially right, I let it that way.
X-Wing. Never had the pleasure, but I know where you come from. Yep, PITA. Those times are now gone, though, games are _way_ easier this days. It seems the remake of Bionic Commando is “hard” as in “old school hard”, though. And there’s always those amazingly complicated games we Europeans (particularly from the east side) still create for the World’s masochistic-OCD pleasure.
Space simulator that’s both difficult and balanced, or at least hasn’t got glaring holes in it: Descent Freespace and Freespace 2. I believe they’re out on public domainish now. Flail SCP (source code project) did a video of some gameplay set to Stabbing Westward – Shame that totally addicted me to the song. Must be the beam weapons. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6VhyMzu12c And yes, this can be snagged for free.
Nice video. Yep, I already played Freespace 2, with all the community enhancements. Great game. I played that with mouse+keyboard and, while I turned out to be quite decent, it can’t match a joystick. Anyway, I drop it in the middle of the alien campaign for some other game. Tried to go back but the (re)learning curve was too steep to finish the mission I was on. The savegame is there, though, so I may come back to it some day.
BTW, I’m sure you’re aware of it, but there’s also a BSG mod for FS2 called Beyond the red line. That’s quite a good one, even if you didn’t enjoy the series.
